On December 20, 2025, the Mulenge Scholars Network Canada hosted the Banyamulenge Youth Empowerment Conference in Edmonton, Alberta. The day was filled with energy, conversation, and a shared commitment to building stronger futures for Banyamulenge youth.
The conference opened with inspiring words from community leaders, reminding participants that education is more than academics—it is a pathway to dignity and leadership. “Education is not just about books; it’s about dignity, opportunity, and leadership,” said Dr. Jean Mukiza, setting the tone for what would be a day of reflection and empowerment.
As the program unfolded, the atmosphere was captured in moments like the group photo taken beneath a colorful balloon arch. The image of nine participants standing together symbolized unity and pride, a reminder that this movement is built on collective strength.
Later, during the youth panel, student speaker Sarah Ndagijimana shared her personal journey: “When I received my scholarship, I felt seen. It wasn’t just financial support—it was a message that my dreams matter.” Her words echoed the warmth of the dining hall, where attendees gathered around tables decorated with floral centerpieces, sharing meals and conversations.
The candid photo of two participants enjoying food together captured the spirit of community—simple, human moments that make empowerment tangible.
Workshops throughout the day provided practical tools for career pathways and mentorship. Program coordinator David Sebineza emphasized collaboration, saying, “We are building futures together. This is collective responsibility—families, organizations, and donors all play a role.”
His message was reflected in the refreshment table, laden with fruit, pastries, and juice, a symbol of hospitality and generosity that sustained participants through the day.
The cultural showcase added another layer of meaning, weaving tradition into the narrative of empowerment. Performer Marie Banyaga reflected afterward: “Our heritage is our strength. By telling our migration stories, we remind ourselves and the world that we belong.”
Her words were reinforced by the official event poster, which highlighted the theme of mentorship, leadership, and community partnerships. The poster stood as a visual anchor, reminding everyone of the purpose behind the gathering.
As the day concluded, participants left inspired and motivated. The images—whether of shared meals, group unity, or the vibrant refreshment spread—tell the story as vividly as the speeches. Together, they capture the essence of the Banyamulenge Youth Empowerment Conference: a movement that blends education, culture, and community into a vision of hope.
